“In my room at the LondonSchool of Economics, I have three posters of great men whom I admire, Malcolm X, Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and Mahatma Gandhi. At the end of my bed, is the Gandhi poster which states, “Live as if you were to die tomorrow, Learn as if you were to live forever.” Everyday that I am in London, I see my self walking into that forever. I am learning so much, whether it be from my classes and lectures, the lectures from some of the most notable intellects (such as Alan Greenspan), or just walking around Central London to see what I can discover. I am truly grateful for the opportunity to have this experience, because it has truly been worthwhile. The English-Speaking Union has definitely enriched me academically, culturally, and socially and I look forward to continuing to work for them and represent them, both in the US and London, now and in the future.”

Sean Mickens, Luard Scholar 2007-2008, recently returned from his Luard Scholarship junior year abroad at London School of Economics and finishing his senior year at Howard University

Luard Scholarships

In 2009, the ESU will celebrate its 40th Anniversary enabling select students attending United Negro College Fund institutions, Hampton University or Howard University to spend their junior year at a British university of their choice through the unique, merit-based Luard Scholarship program.

Since the inaugural 1969-70 academic year, 68 Luard Scholars have performed with distinction at 18 different British universities, including Oxford University, Cambridge University, Edinburgh University, Nottingham University, and the London School of Economics and Political Science. They have served as exemplary unofficial ambassadors for the United States while abroad and for British higher education upon returning home.

The outstanding sophomores who are granted Luard Scholarships receive full tuition for a junior year of study at a British University of their choosing, plus a stipend to cover travel and living expenses.

The scholarship is open to students in all disciplines, and has been awarded to students majoring in economics, philosophy, finance, mathematics, liberal arts and the sciences.

2008 Luard Scholarship recipient Justin Bynum (center) will attend Cambridge University. To his left and right are Scholarship finalists Jessica Wright and Janine Mobley. The Luard Scholarship Committee members are (left to right) Duane Hughes, Barbara Schmitter, Dr. Cheryl Benoit Mwaria and Committee Chair Dr. Laurence Morse.

Justin was accepted to Cambridge University, Homerton College and begins his study of Philosophy in early October.
