Founded in 1923 The Columbus Branch of The English-Speaking Union is one of the oldest branches in the U.S. Established in 1923, the Columbus Branch has a long history of uniting people interested in understanding and reaching out to people of all nationalities and cultural heritages through the medium of the English language.
Our branch also participates in the Books as Envoys Program, which was established by The English-Speaking Union of the United States. Each year, The ESU of the United States selects works of literature that best interpret life and culture in the United States. The Columbus Branch sends a set of these books to the ESU Branch in Budapest, Hungary.
Another program in which the Columbus Branch participates is the Walter Hines Page Scholarship Program.
The Columbus Branch also holds monthly dinner meetings, which feature interesting speakers, and provides other social events such as its annual English Tea.
English in Action Program Today, to help create cultural understanding and promote dialog, the Columbus Branch participates in English-in-Action. Volunteer are matched with OSU "visiting scholars" for one-on-one conversations. The visiting scholars are usually post doctoral students or researchers who are here, usually for 6 months to 2 years, working on joint research projects with Ohio State. The program provides an important opportunity for them to build their English skills and interact with Americans outside the university setting. For information about this program contact Pat Moore.
| Middle School Debate project In addition to the above programs, the Columbus Branch, along with branches in Kentucky and North Carolina, is participating in a pilot project cosponsored by the ESU national organization and ALOUD, Associated Leaders of Urban Debate. The debate competitions promote youth expression as a vehicle for urban education reform and civic participation. For information contact Barb Ambos.
