BRIEF HISTORY
Houston is the fourth-largest city in the United States of America with a total population of well over two million. The city has a cultural diversity unlike any other in Texas with at least eighty-eight International Consulates and their associated Chambers of Commerce, Art, Space Exploration, the Oil Industry and the Por tof Houston. The cityscape may be one of skyscrapers, but the international appeal of Houston ahs played a major role in shaping the future of the city.
Thus, in 1957, the English-Speaking Union Houston Branch was formed to meet the needs of a truly International City and a Major Center of Trade and Commerce for the United States and Texas. We are here to accept the challenging times upon us and lead the organization into the future. As our mission states: We promote scholarship and the advancement of knowledge through the effective use of English in an expanding global community. The only way to accomplish this task is to become a leader within the global community and reach out to similar groups with ties to the Commonwealth. We can accomplish so much more if we join together in unity.
The members of the English-Speaking Union Houston Branch share a common goal with the other Unions around the world. We host a vast array of events and educational programs as well as take part in seminars, lectures and social events. Members iin the Houston Branch can benefit greatly from personal relationships and international exposure gained from the English-Speaking Union activities.
ANNUAL EVENTS
The Garden Party, Christmas Brunch, Shakespeare Competition and the Evelyn Wrench Speaker Series. Our other activities include Wine and/or Cocktail Socials, Art Show Fundraiser and the Distinguished Speaker Event.
