The SEATTLE BRANCH Welcomes you!

Seattle is blessed with the Puget Sound and the Olympic Mountains to the west and Lake Washington and the Cascade Mountain Range, including Mt. Rainier, to the east. Located in Washington state, it is the Pacific Northwest headquarters for business and industry, professional sports and cultural activities. It is also the gateway to the Pacific and Canada, a mere two hour drive away.

Please join us as one of the 70 United States Branches, along with those in 55 countries, including 36 Branches in the UK.

Since the Seattle Branch of the English-Speaking Union was established in 1929, we have a long history of uniting people interested in understanding and reaching out to people of all nationalities and cultural heritages through the medium of the English language.

Our Branch participates in the National Shakespeare Competition, English-In-Action, the National Speakers Program and Walter Hines Page Scholarships Program.

You will enjoy monthly receptions in member's homes, Speaker Dinners, a gala Christmas Ball, an annual cruise on Lake Washington, and a festive summer Garden Party. Along with auctions and raffles you will help support scholarships for worthy students as you participate in our varied social, cultural and philanthropic activities.

RECEPTIONS PAST AND PRESENT
We had a wonderful March reception at Anne Passantino's home. The fireplace warmed us and Patricia Church and her hostesses filled the table with great buffet offerings. A special thanks to Joe Harrington who handled the bar and flags solo as Steve was out of town. No small task!! Anne has a lovely and comfortable home and is so gracious to help us out during blustery weather. Some day we should visit her during warm summery weather to take advantage of her deck and enjoy the glorious views. Many thanks, Anne.

MANY THANKS TO FRED KLEINSCHMIDT
For many years Fred Kleinschmidt has contributed very welcomed funds which were also matched by the Employee's Community Fund of the Boeing Company. In February, the Seattle Branch of the ESU was gifted $1,543 -- Many thanks, Fred, to the continuation of our Branch and its good work.

2011 Evelyn Wrench speaker Adrian Tinniswood

We were delighted to have noted British author and historian, Adrian Tinniswood, as our speaker for our April 1st event at the historic Diocesan House. The topic of his speech, "England's Barbary Wars," was about the Royal Navy's life-and-death struggle with the fearsome pirates of The Barbary centuries before America's own Barbary Wars. These pirates called themselves mujahideen and talked of jihad against the Western infidel, terrorizing English merchant shipping and enslaving thousands of English sailors.

Many thanks to Ingrid Philbrick and James Kemp-Slaughter for co-chairing what was a special evening.

JANE HALLET AWARD

John Monroe presented the Jane Hallet Award to Pat Wilson for her efforts on behalf of the Seattle branch.

Upon receiving the award, I thought of Jane a unique lady who over the years chaired English-in-Action, Hospitality and many other committees. Jane went to most of the regional and national conferences until in the later years she slowed down.

Most of us have "Jane" stories we could relate as she was certainly an individual in her own right. But what I mostly thought about were Jane's last days and how the help of certain of our members made them easier. Without the help of Sarah and Jerry Rockhold and the ever patient Eleanor Monroe-plus the cards and visits of many other members-those days would have been bleak indeed.

We have a branch filled with members who truly care for one another. I am proud to have served as a past president and been a member for over 25 years. We may have our disagreements but truly do care for each other. - Pat Wilson

SEATTLE BRANCH SCHOLARSHIP COMMITTEE

Beginning in fall 2008, the Seattle Branch has given scholarships of $1500 each to four entering graduate students in the University of Washington's English Department. This will help the department recruit the very best students, our teachers and scholars of English in the future.

SUPPORT FOR SCHOLARSHIP AWARDS
The Scholarship Committee thanks you for your generous contributions in response to our February request. Many thanks to Mary Mohler, Betty Carter, Robert Schramke, Alan Waggoner, Dwyla Donohue, Harriet Trabert, Don McKenzie, Vincent Jolivet, Dorothy Kittleson, Stan Beckelman, Patricia Haggerty, Kristen Ferguson, Biff Roche, Janet Reed, Marge Harvey, Charlotte Henke, Donna Smith, Sarah Atwood, H. DeForest Hardinge, Loveday Conquest, Mona Belle Miller, Mary Bakke, Sainsbury Strack, Larry Woodin, Henry Kuharic, Gay Saunders, Edward Hyde and Anne Passantino for their generous support. Much appreciated.

ESU AND UW'S ENGLISH DEPARTMENT ANNOUNCE FALL 2011 SCHOLARSHIP WINNERS

The ESU's Scholarship Committee is pleased to announce that four entering graduate students have been granted Recruitment Scholarships from the Seattle Branch. Each student, upon entry to the graduate program in English in Fall 2011, will receive a scholarship of $1,500. We will get to meet them at one of our members' receptions and at the May 2012 Annual General Meeting. Their names and areas of interest are as follows:

Elaine Barr. A graduate of Indiana University, Barr is a specialist in eighteenth and nineteenth century American literature. She proposes to study both the origins of the historical novel as a genre in the writings of Cooper and Hawthorne and the later use of the form to reflect on early American experience.

Taylor Boulware. A B.A and M.A. graduate of Oregon State University, Boulware’s areas of focus are speculative and fantasy fiction, especially dystopian (the opposite of utopian) fiction for young adult audiences. Why do books such as Twilight appeal to so many young readers, especially teenage girls, and what does that say about contemporary American culture?

Jeffrey Janosik. Having received a B.A. from the University of Wisconsin (Eau Claire), and an M.A. from the same university at Milwaukee, Janosik comes to the UW as a specialist in the British Victorian era. He is particularly interested in the many ways in which food takes on a curious unexpected prominence in Victorian literature and life, from the hungry orphans in Dickens’ novels to the production of colonialist cookbooks for housewives in India, to parliamentary debates over what can legally go into a sausage.

Samantha Simon. A graduate of Emory University and Hunter College, Simon concentrates her research on African American literature. Having also studied in South Africa, she approaches the history of slavery in the U.S. as an episode within a broader story concerning the movement of goods and peoples around the globe.

Every ESU member and guest who has attended a reception, purchased an auction item, made a cash donation or other contribution, has participated in funding these scholarships. These terrific students made their decision to attend the UW partly as a result of our ESU Recruitment Competition. Thank you for your support!
