All of our programs are made possible through the generous support of our members and friends since the English-Speaking Union receives no governmental assistance. The Chicago Branch supports the aims and mission of the ESU with the following educational and cultural programs:
Chicago Branch Scholarship Program Each year, grants are awarded to Illinois graduate students and junior faculty for dissertation and post-graduate research in the UK.
Page Scholar Program This annual program promotes the exchange of ideas and expertise by bringing British educators for a short-term visit to Chicago institutions to study developments in their specific fields of education.
BUSS Program The British University Summer School annual scholarship program allows an American high school teacher to become a student again, studying English literature, theatre, or social studies at Oxford University, University of Edinburgh, or the Globe Theatre Centre in London.
Books as Envoys The Chicago Branch sends copies of the Ambassador Award Books and English dictionaries to ESU organizations, currently in Poland and Bulgaria. The Ambassador Award Books are chosen each year by an ESU committee chaired by J.D. McClatchy.
Shakespeare Competition and Seminar Chicagoland high school students are given the opportunity to compete in Chicago for prizes. The winner is sponsored on a trip to New York City to compete with other branch winners for the national prize. Professional actors and directors judge the students on their presentation of a Shakespeare sonnet and monologue. Teachers and high school students may attend an all-day workshop in Chicago on teaching and acting Shakespeare.
M. Suzanne Dunea Lectures A series at which a noted expert addresses current business, cultural, or scholarly topics. This lecture series is named for our benefactor, Ms. Dunea, who believes in the mission of the English-Speaking Union.
Branch members are invited to participate in the annual Ascot Ball, the Holiday Sing-Along with Stanley Paul, and summer events at the Chicago Yacht Club and the Saddle & Cycle Club.
