The current Colonial-NC Branch was organized on June 6, 1993, its first President being Margaret Nassef, who we are glad to have again as a member of our Board.
The present Branch evolved from the Greenville, NC Branch, founded in November, 1976 by the storied ESU member Ralph Hardee-Rives, who was its President for over 10 years. Since there was an ESU Branch in Greenville, SC, the change to the Colonial-NC designation helps to avoid confusion.
The Branch hosts a number of speakers, some of international stature, and others with an interest in local aspects of the English-Speaking tradition. Our fund-raising efforts have enabled many local teachers and students to enjoy the opportunity to pursue their studies at Universities in England. Our major annual event is the local contest which enables a North Carolina high school student to travel on an expense-paid trip to New York City and compete in the National Shakespeare Contest sponsored by the ESU. Past Branch winners have consistently placed highly at this Lincoln Center event, and we are sure that soon one of our students will win the coveted prize of a Drama Scholarship to the land of Shakespeare.
In the recent past, our events have taken the form of English Teas, especially to celebrate the official Queen’s Birthday, fund-raising speaker’s luncheons, and free public meetings arranged in cooperation with the Friends of the Craven-New Bern Public Library, and the Tryon Palace Historical Department. |
