The Nashville Branch of The English-Speaking Union is proud to participate in these programs:
National Speaker Program: Every year, National Headquarters of the ESU provides an Evelyn Wrench speaker to our Branch at no cost to us, other than hospitality. We have heard from fascinating authorities in fields ranging from the Victoria and Albert Museum to a diplomat's life in West Africa.
National Shakespeare Competition
Since 1983, nearly 200,000 teenagers have participated in the program. Here in Nashville, we have had a National winner, as well as many fine regional winners. Ricardo Beaird (pictured), who won here in 2008, was one of the top ten finalists in New York. We combine the competition with a free Shakespeare workshop for teachers and students, partnering with professionals from the Nashville Shakespeare Festival. Our program has been showcased at National ESU Conferences.
Shakespeare Set Free Institute A performance-based teaching institute sponsored by the Folger's Library and the English-Speaking Union. SEE DETAILS of the 2011 program in Nashville.
British University Summer School Fellowships As with many other ESU Branches, when funds allow, we award a fellowship to a high school teacher for summer study at Oxford University, the Globe Theatre Centre in London or the Scottish Universities International Summer School Program. Alternatively, the Branch sends a high school teacher to the American Shakespeare Center at the Blackfriars PLayhouse in Staunton, Virginia and another to the Oregon Shakespeare Festival in Ashland, Oregon. These awards are entirely dependent upon contributions from our members.
Walter Hines Page Scholarships The Nashville Branch has hosted educators from England, Argentina and New Zealand, who have come to study a particular aspect of American teaching methods by visiting classrooms and meeting with professionals in our local schools. |
