THE PROVIDENCE BRANCH of the ENGLISH-SPEAKING UNION of the UNITED STATES

Education. Scholarship. Understanding.
Mission Statement:
The ESU celebrates English as a shared language to foster global understanding and good will by providing educational and cultural opportunity for students, educators and members.

THE PROVIDENCE BRANCH

Thank you for visiting the English-Speaking Union Providence Branch’s website. Our branch has been in existence for more than sixty years Our various educational programs include: the Providence ESU Shakespeare Competition for all Rhode Island high school students, the Mowry-Bridgham Scholarship for a Rhode Island college level student studying in the United Kingdom, and the Evelyn Wrench Speaker Program. We welcome visitors to our programs and would love to expand our membership. Please try out one or two of our programs to see if you like the organization. We invite you to join us! Please refer to the calendar page of our website to see upcoming events.

We also bring our members a series of programs with outstanding speakers. The Evelyn Wrench speakers for the last two years have been well-known historians with recently published books. This year's speaker in April, 2011, Michael Slater, promises to give us an insider's look at Charles Dickens.

Most of our evening meetings are held at The Hope Club in Providence. We offer two options for these meetings. The first is a cocktail hour with cash bar followed by dinner and the talk. The second, for those not wishing to attend the dinner, is a coffee/dessert option at a cost of approximately $10. We also continue our traditions of the Holiday Tea which benefits the Shakespeare competition organized by David Burnham, and the June Garden Party benefiting the Mowry-Bridgham Scholarship organized by Peter Allen.

Goals for 2010-11 include Public Relations/Marketing: We are still looking for corporate and individual sponsors for the Shakespeare Competition and the Mowry-Bridgham Scholar Award programs. If you have any ideas, please let us know.
We need a communications director who would be willing to increase our internet presence on sites such as Who Fish, The Providence Mayor’s website, and with local schools. We also discussed having articles about our organization in the Pro-Jo, RI Monthly, and East Side Monthly. We would like to have more extensive media coverage of the Shakespeare competition. We are looking for volunteers for the board as well as various committee chairs including membership.
