Our 2011/2012 Dinner Speaker Program will provide an exciting and informative evening for all of our members and their invited guests.

From October through May the second Wednesday of every month is your chance to meet and hear some of the most interesting speakers from around the country and from around the world as well. The English Speaking Union has an amazing season lined up for 2011-12.

The coming season will start close to home with a look at shipwrecks off the coast of North Carolina. We will take a look at the secrets off our coastline with the author Kevin Duffus who will be telling tales and telling us about our coastal history.

From the Netherlands comes Corinne Dettmeijer one of the world’s experts on human trafficking. A judge at The Hague and one of the world’s experts on the dangers facing many women, children and men who are trapped into various forms of human slavery both here and abroad. . If you have a daughter, a wife, a mother or even a son, you owe it to yourself to know what is going on both in the United States and around the globe on this topic.

Come December we return to Holiday Spirits and this year we have Arturo Ciompi. He helped bring Southern Seasons wine division into being first rate and global. He writes for several publications about all things wine and will be leading us through a tasting of wine paired with a special luncheon built around the chosen wines. This is on a Sunday and is ESU’s only luncheon.

George Poteat, former professor at the JFK Special Warfare Center will take us through a look at the cultural aspects of what the Southeast Asian wars have taught us and how we train for different cultures as we send our soldiers out into very different worlds.

Dr. John Turner comes to us from SCC to set our toes to tappin’ and remind us of the History of Rock ‘n Roll: the sounds, the historical connections and how the world changed along with the music. From Jerry Lee Lewis to the Beatles, the stories and music clips will amaze you.

Vickie Leon has written an informative and funny book about life of long ago: Working IX to V. She will talk about jobs from the ancient world the ones we would recognize and the those we would not. She has been interviewed on NPR, and numerous other publications.

Graham Anthony is coming from Cambridge England to talk about the Titanic and to mark the 100th anniversary of the sinking of what was thought to be a magnificent and perfect ship. He has sailed extensively on his own sailboats in many and has lectured extensively in universities and cruise ships.

And finally in May, from the International Center for Jefferson Studies at Monticello, Andrew O’Shaughnessy will speak about his new book entitled: “The Men Who Lost America.” Mr. O’Shaughnessy is the director International Center for Jefferson Studies at Monticello, professor at the University of Virginia and fellow of the Royal Historical Society.
