Founded in 1923 The Columbus Branch of The English-Speaking Union is one of the oldest branches in the U.S. Established in 1923, the Columbus Branch has a long history of uniting people interested in understanding and reaching out to people of all nationalities and cultural heritages through the medium of the English language.
Today, to help create this understanding, the Columbus Branch participates in the Books as Envoys Program, established by The English-Speaking Union of the United States. Each year, The ESU of the United States selects works of literature that best interpret life and culture in the United States. The Columbus Branch sends a set of these books to the ESU Branch in Budapest, Hungary.
Another program in which the Columbus Branch participates is the Walter Hines Page Scholarship Program.
The Columbus Branch also holds monthly dinner meetings, which feature interesting speakers, and provides other social events such as its annual English Tea.
| Shakespeare Competition - our newest undertaking In addition to the above programs, the Columbus Branch is in the planning stages of initiating a Shakespeare Competition. This is the premier educational program of The English-Speaking of the United States, the one that reaches the largest number of students and teachers around the country.
Through the program, students perform monologues and sonnets in three qualifying stages: schools, community and national. Each spring, the winners of the Branch competitions go to New York City to take part in the national contest. During the semi-finals, all competitors get the chance to perform on stage at Lincoln Center. |
