“Creating Global Understanding Through English”

The Richmond, Virginia, Branch of the English-Speaking Union is one of 71 local branches of the English-Speaking Union of the United States, Inc., a non-profit, non-political, educational organization formally organized in 1920. It shares its mission with more than 50 nations with English-Speaking Union organizations.

MISSION AND PURPOSE

The English-Speaking Union of the United States is committed to promoting scholarship and the advancement of knowledge through the effective use of English in an expanding global community. The Richmond Branch also seeks to promote understanding and good will among the people of the world who speak English, supports cultural programs and educational exchanges, and cultivates an appreciation of our common English-speaking heritage.

EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS
    British Universities Summer Studies

This program, administered by the English-Speaking Union of the United States in conjunction with the participating British institutions, provides an exceptional opportunity for teachers and rising college seniors to attend summer study programs in either of three locations: the Globe Theater in London, which offers Teaching Shakespeare in Performance; the University of Oxford, which offers English Literature courses as well as courses in History, Politics and Society; and the University of Edinburgh, which offers Literature in Twentieth Century Britain. The Richmond Branch of the ESU endeavors to provide funds sufficient to cover the costs of tuition and transportation.

    Walter Hines Page Scholarship

These scholarships are awarded to English-speaking secondary educators and administrators from countries with ESU organizations. They make short-term visits to branches in the U.S. to study developments in their respective fields. The Richmond Branch has a tradition of extending hospitality to Page scholars, providing housing with a ESU member family and assisting the scholar with transportation and appointments while in the Richmond area.

    Books as Envoys

The Ambassador Book Awards are presented annually to those authors whose works best represent American life in the areas of fiction, biography, poetry, and American studies. Copies of these works are then sent as “literary ambassadors” to libraries and schools in the developing world. The Richmond Branch sends its books to the English-Speaking Union Branch in Madagascar, which has determined that they are of greatest use in the English Department of the University of Antananarivo.
