of The English-Speaking Union The English-Speaking Union of the United States is an American, non-profit, non-political, educational organization supported entirely by the dues and contributions of its members and friends.
Sir Evelyn Wrench founded the ESU of the United States in 1920. Past Presidents and Chairmen include former Presidents William Howard Taft and Dwight David Eisenhower, and four former Ambassadors to Great Britain: John W. Davis, Lewis W. Douglas, John Hay Whitney, and Anne L. Armstrong.
The Naples Branch was established in 1990 and is one of 76 American Branches. There are over 100 international ESU Branches, most of which are in non-English speaking countries.
| OUR PROGRAMS
British University Summer School -- Scholarships for Teachers The Naples Branch awards grants to outstanding local high school English and drama teachers to study at Oxford University in England and Edinburgh University in Scotland, where they attend summer courses in English literature.
Shakespeare Competition The Naples Branch sponsors an annual competition for high school students throughout the area. Students perform their selected renditions of Shakespeare and the winner is sent, all expenses paid, to New York to compete in the National Shakespeare competition. From there, the winner receives a grant to attend a summer course at the Globe Theatre in London.
The Walter Hines Page Scholarships Each year the Naples Branch hosts a British educator or administrator who has been selected to come to the U.S. to study educational developments relevant to his or her own specialized field. Local accommodations, professional appointments and speaking engagements are arranged.
English In Action The Naples Branch has supported innovative programs at several of the local middle and high schools to assist non-English speaking students. Currently the Branch sponsors the "Reading Is Fundamental" program at Naples High School with funding for books, which the students are allowed to keep.
Books-As-Envoys From National Headquarters each year the Ambassador Book Awards Committee compiles a selection of defining American books. The Naples Branch sends sets of these books to selected branches throughout the world where they help contribute to a keener understanding of life and culture in the United States.
Speech, Debate, and Music The Naples Branch helps defray the travel expenses of the award-winning Barron Collier High School Band and Pipers and the championship Lely High School Speech and Debate Team. Both of these nationally and internationally recognized organizations are training grounds for our nation's future leaders.
