Mission
The English-Speaking Union of the United States (ESUUS) is committed to promoting scholarship and the advancement of knowledge through the effective use of the English language in an expanding global community.
History
From its founding in 1920, the ESU has been dedicated to strengthening friendship among English speaking peoples by supporting information programs, educational and professional exchanges, and person-to-person contacts. While remaining committed to these activities and recognizing that English has become the world language, today the ESU has broadened its mission to provide projects in instruction and conversation for those seeking to learn English as a second language. It has also reaffirmed its commitment to education by offering awards in literature and in new methods of teaching English.
The Newport Branch, started in 1968, is one of over 74 branches nationwide which, together, have approximately 11,000 members. Around the world there are more than 50 additional ESU branches, most of which are in non-English speaking countries.
A percentage of the dues collected from members of the Newport Branch goes to the National ESU office in New York to help support programs sponsored by the National ESU.
Whether at home in Newport, at ESU branches around the U.S., or at ESU branches abroad, ESU members participate in activities designed to further our mission of Creating Global Understanding Through English.
