A Brief History of Our Branch
The English-Speaking Union was founded in London, England in 1918 with the National office for the United States being founded two years later in 1920. There are 72 branches within the US and 60 worldwide.
Founded in 1948 the Syracuse Branch of the English-Speaking Union was formed by Charter members; Richard Dundon O.B.E, Professor Freeman Galpin and E.R. Vadeboncoeur.
The branch was formerly the Anglo-American League which was founded in 1939 by Richard Dundon. The League served to provide temporary homes for children from war-torn Britain. Over 1500 youngsters were found shelter in homes through the League and Richard Dundon, a Welsh-American was later awarded the Order of the British Empire for his efforts.
Because of the similarities in the aims and purposes of the League and the English-Speaking Union, the League became the Syracuse Branch of the English-Speaking Union.
The Syracuse Branch continues this proud legacy left by our charter members with over 120 members actively supporting our Educational and Social Programs.
