US Teachers Onstage in London!

While London is abuzz with Olympic fervor, twenty talented schoolteachers from the US are in the midst of their own physical and intellectual gymnastics on the stage of Shakespeare's Globe theatre in London as ESU British Universities Summer School (BUSS) scholars.  The "gold medals" they will bring back for their country and their students are new methods to teach Shakespeare's timeless works in classrooms across the United States.

Each summer, Globe Education in association with the English-Speaking Union of the United States offers Teaching Shakespeare Through Performance, a dynamic, continuing education course for select American teachers.  Participants must be middle or high school English or Drama teachers. Most of them have won full fellowships from their local ESU Branches to fund the course tuition, housing, meals and travel expenses.

For two weeks, teachers live and breathe Shakespeare, immersed in the life of a working theatre. Their days are full and intensive with classes from morning to night with renowned Shakespearean scholars and members of the Globe theatre company responsible for design, direction, movement, music, text and voice.   They view two Globe productions and have performed on the Globe stage. This week they are busy working with directors on selected scenes from Henry V and The Taming of the Shrew which they themselves will perform on July 13, 2012.

The 2013 dates, prices and application details for the Teaching Shakespeare Through Performance program will be available in November 2012.  For more information, please visit our BUSS Scholarship Page or contact ESU International Programs Manager, Alice Uhl at

A currently participating BUSS Scholar expressed her appreciation to her ESU Branch President writing, I wanted to take a moment to express to you how wonderful this experience has already been.  I am learning so much and I am already making plans for when I start the school year.  Tonight, we perform on the Globe stage--what a moment that will be and something I never imagined for myself.  So thank you for enabling me to see another side of myself and for giving me the opportunity to improve my skills.  I can't wait to see what next week brings!
