2019 ESU Annual Conference

New OrleansThe English-Speaking Union welcomes its members to Washington, DC, for the 2019 ESU Annual Conference. The conference will set the stage for and represent the kick-off for the Centennial of the English-Speaking Union, which will take place during 2020. The conference will include the ESU 2019 Annual General Meeting, social events including receptions and meals, breakout sessions, panel discussions and local tours and museum visits as well as updates and camaraderie to advance our programs supporting teachers, students and recent immigrants.

Our conference venue will be the Cosmos Club (left), 2121 Massachusetts Ave. NW, (Embassy Row near Dupont Circle) and the newly opened National Churchill Library & Center, 2130 H St NW, Gelman Library at George Washington University. See Schedule of Events (over).

A limited number of accommodations are available at the Cosmos Club from $199 and up plus taxes. To reserve a room, please call Mr. Mbaye Ndour at 1-202-387-7783 by September 30, 2019 and mention the English-Speaking Union room block.

We also have a block of rooms reserved across the street at The Fairfax at Embassy Row at a special rate of $199 per night plus taxes. To book a room, please call 1-855-559-8899 or 1-202-293-2100 by September 30, 2019, when the room block will expire.


This year, we will honor and celebrate our National Patrons at a special High Tea on Saturday afternoon, November 2, from 4 to 5:30 p.m. It will take place at the DACOR Bacon House (right), an historic residence located at 1801 F Street, NW. Built in 1825, it has been adapted as office space and clubhouse for the Diplomatic and Consular Officers Retired (DACOR) organization.

Cultural Day Trip to Mount Vernon Join us on a tour of US history, a tour of George Washington's Mount Vernon home and the grounds on the Potomac River. Enjoy an elegant lunch at the Mount Vernon Inn. Then take an insider's tour of the Fred Smith Library that is not open to the public, but only open to scholars who want to research George Washington and Colonel America. This library is also known as George Washington's Presidential Library.
