The Paseo Academy of Fine and Performing Arts held its first annual "Arts on the Hill: Spring Arts Festival" on Friday, March 14, 2014. The Festival is a celebration of the arts, featuring Paseo's talented artist-scholars, alumni, and honoring Paseo's arts/business partnerships of Kansas City.
The ESU Kansas City Branch participated as one of the business partners with Paseo in its Spring Arts Festival with an information table providing handouts and membership details on the ESU to students, teachers, alumni and other business partners attending the event. Students at the Festival helped celebrate William Shakespeare's 450th birthday in 2014 by sharing a large, decorated cake donated by the ESU Kansas City Branch.
The ESU Kansas City Branch has been a long-time partner with Paseo Academy. For many years, Paseo has supported and participated in the ESU's Annual Shakespeare Competition.
Makenna Lockhart, a junior at Paseo, won First Place in ESU's 2014 Shakespeare Competition. At the outdoor Festival, Makenna performed her Shakespeare monologue interpreting the character of Phoebe from As You Like It.
Twenty years ago in 1994, another Paseo student, Dannye Thompson, not only won First Place in the Kansas City's Branch Competition, but she went on to New York City to win First Place in the ESU National Shakespeare Competition. Makenna gets her chance to win First Place in the National Finals when she travels to New York City to compete with 58 other ESU Branch semi-finalists on May 5, 2014.
