AUSTIN TEEN COMPETES IN 34th ANNUAL ENGLISH-SPEAKING UNION NATIONAL SHAKESPEARE COMPETITON IN NEW YORK CITY

With a performance of a sonnet and monologue from Shakespeare, Reese Twilla  from San Antonio, TX, a student of Laurie Tafoya at Cornerstone Christian School in San Antonio, placed as a semi-finalist in the 34th  annual English-Speaking Union National Shakespeare Competition in New York City. The Competition took place on May 1, 2017 on the stage of the Mitzi Newhouse Theater at Lincoln Center with 54 semi-finalists from as many ESU Branch competitions nationwide. Reese previously won the ESU Austin Branch competition.

This year's winner of the 34th English-Speaking Union National Shakespeare Competition, Ogechi Egonu, representing the San Francisco Branch, received a full scholarship to attend the American Shakespeare Center Theatre Camp in Staunton, VA, this summer.  Second place winner, Brandon Burk, from the Kentucky Branch, won a cash prize of $1,000 from The English-Speaking Union, while the third place winner, Trevon Wainwright, representing the Kansas City Branch of the ESU, received an award of $500 provided by The Shakespeare Society.

All the World's a Stage For Austin Teen

With a performance of a sonnet and monologue from Shakespeare on stage at Lincoln Center in New York City, JESSE HERNANDEZ from Austin, TX, a student of Christina Burbank at Crockett High School in Austin, placed as a semi-finalist in the 33 rd annual English-Speaking Union National Shakespeare Competition. The Competition took place on May 2, 2016 with 55 semi-finalists from as many ESU Branch competitions nationwide. Jesse previously won the ESU Austin Branch competition.

2015 National Shakespeare Competition

We invite schools serving Grades 9-12 in the Central Texas area to celebrate the Bard's 450th birthday this year by participating in the 2015 ESU National Shakespeare Competition. The Competition provides teachers with a free performance-based program for the study of English Language Arts and Shakespeare that satisfies Common Core State Standards. 2014 Shakespeare Competition Results

First place winner John Harris

The 2014 ESU Austin Shakespeare Competition was held January 8th at Austin High School's Preas Theater. Contestants from 10 area high schools registered for the event. Due to illness one competitor could not attend, so nine students participated. The contestants ranged in age from 14 to 18 and every student turned in an excellent performance.

Our panel of distinguished judges included: Ann Ciccolella (Artistic Director of Austin Shakespeare), Professor James Loehlin (director of the University of Texas Shakespeare at Winedale program), and Dr William Campbell (former president of The University of the South, and long-time ESU Austin branch member).

The judges announced the following winners:

First place: John Harris, 18, Round Rock High School (monologue from The Merchant of Venice, Act III, Sc 1; Sonnet 130)

Second place: Evan Hays, 14, Dripping Springs High School (monologue from The Merchant of Venice, Act V, Sc 1, Sonnet 57)

Third place: Albert Martinez, 18, Crockett High School (monologue from The Taming of the Shrew, Act IV, Sc 1, Sonnet 130)

CALL FOR APPLICATIONS: English Speaking Union Austin Branch 2014 Scholarship, "Teaching Shakespeare through Performance" at The Globe

Dear Educator,

In late March, the Austin branch of the English Speaking Union (ESU) will award its bi-annual scholarship to an area drama/Theater Arts/ or English literature teacher to attend a three-week course, "Teaching Shakespeare through Performance" at Shakespeare's Globe Theatre in London. The program dates are July 13 – August 2, 2014.

The ESU Austin branch scholarship covers the cost of course fees, including tuition, room, and tickets for three Globe productions. In addition, the scholarship provides funds for economy airfare, airport transportation, most meals not covered by course fees and some additional miscellaneous expenses.
