The 2014 ESU Austin Shakespeare Competition was held January 8th at Austin High School's Preas Theater. Contestants from 10 area high schools registered for the event. Due to illness one competitor could not attend, so nine students participated. The contestants ranged in age from 14 to 18 and every student turned in an excellent performance.
Our panel of distinguished judges included: Ann Ciccolella (Artistic Director of Austin Shakespeare), Professor James Loehlin (director of the University of Texas Shakespeare at Winedale program), and Dr William Campbell (former president of The University of the South, and long-time ESU Austin branch member).
The judges announced the following winners:
First place: John Harris, 18, Round Rock High School (monologue from The Merchant of Venice, Act III, Sc 1; Sonnet 130)
Second place: Evan Hays, 14, Dripping Springs High School (monologue from The Merchant of Venice, Act V, Sc 1, Sonnet 57)
Third place: Albert Martinez, 18, Crockett High School (monologue from The Taming of the Shrew, Act IV, Sc 1, Sonnet 130)
