The Charlottesville Branch<\/strong>\u00a0will again host the\u00a0Nation-wide ESU Happy\u00a0Hour Podcast<\/strong>. The Branch is honored to have John A. Ragosta, PhD\/JD, as our speaker. An award-winning author, Dr. Ragosta is a historian, lawyer, and beekeeper living in Charlottesville, Virginia. He\u00a0is\u00a0currently\u00a0a historian at the Robert H. Smith International Center for Jefferson Studies at Monticello and a fellow at Virginia Humanities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He has taught history\u00a0and law\u00a0at\u00a0the University of Virginia, George Washington University,\u00a0Hamilton, Oberlin, and Randolph Colleges.\u00a0His most recent book,\u00a0For the People, For the Country: Patrick Henry\u2019s Final Political Battle<\/em>, was released by the University of Virginia Press in 2023. He will talk on the following topic….<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hyper-partisanship in the 1790s drove the still-new United States to the brink of Civil War. Thomas Jefferson warned that the Federalists\u2019 Sedition Act initiated a \u201creign of witches\u201d and asked states to \u201cnullify\u201d federal laws. Fearing the possibility of secession, George Washington begged Patrick Henry to oppose Jefferson\u2019s radical states\u2019 rights agenda. Henry, the great anti-federalist who had opposed ratification of the Constitution, came out of retirement to defend the Constitution that he had opposed because \u201cwe the people\u201d had adopted it. In the process, Henry explained the role of a \u201cloyal opposition.\u201d\u00a0For the People, For the Country: Patrick Henry\u2019s Final Political Battle<\/em>\u00a0tells the story about how a democracy must work if it is to survive. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
