ESU Kansas City Branch Hosts ESU-Folger Teaching Shakespeare Workshop

The English-Speaking Union, in partnership with the world-renowned Folger Shakespeare Library, developed a custom-designed one-day workshop for middle and high school teachers to give tools they need to bring Shakespeare to life in their classrooms. The ESU-Folger Teaching Shakespeare Workshop was held on June 15, 2016, at the Kansas City Public Library, Central Library, downtown Kansas City, MO.

This workshop was exclusively offered to educators in select cities in the U.S. in which ESU Branches are located. The Kansas City Branch of the English-Speaking Union was pleased to be one of the host cities offering this Teaching Shakespeare Workshop to middle and high school teachers in the Kansas City Metro Area. Jessica Cakrasenjaya, a Master Teacher from the Folger National Teacher Corps was the Workshop instructor and focused on the Folger Four—scholarship, performance, curriculum and assessment.

             ESU Goes to the Movies        Dame Helen Mirren in The Audience

THE AUDIENCE--an encore film starring Helen Mirren and Richard McCabe coming to Kansas City, July 19 at 7:00 pm. ESU members and friends are invited to attend this one-night screening at AMC Town Center 20. Ticket purchases are below.

In celebration of HRH Queen Elizabeth II's 90th birthday this year, The Audience which was recorded live during the original run of the production in London's West End in 2013, is returning to select movie theatres.

First Folio! The Book that Gave Us Shakespeare Now on Exhibit at the Kansas City Public Library through June 28, 2016

One of the most valuable books in English Literature, is now on display at the Kansas City Public Library, Central Library downtown as part of a nationwide tour of the historical William Shakespeare First Folio document. The First Folio Exhibit opened June 6 and continues through June 28, 2016. It is a free exhibit on the fifth floor in the Missouri Valley Room.

The Kansas City Public Library is exhibiting this literary masterpiece as part of the international events planned for 2016 in observance of the 400th anniversary of William Shakespeare's death. The English-Speaking Union is one of six partners working with the Kansas City Public Library in bringing this exhibit to Kansas City.

ESU Presents our Annual Shakespeare Festival Group Night

The Heart of America Shakespeare Festival's 24th season brings to Kansas City audiences one of Shakespeare's most beloved comedies, Twelfth Night. It was believed to have been written around 1601–02 as a Twelfth Night's entertainment for the close of the Christmas season.

Like so many of Shakespeare plays, Twelfth Night relies on mistaken identity, deception, disguises, trickery and double entendres for its humor. It is a hilarious, yet romantic comedy that displays Shakespeare's tendency to write themes that are ahead of his time, featuring scenes including gender reversal, practical jokes, raucous antics, ravishing language and rich characters.
