SUMMARY:The Science of Shakespeare
DESCRIPTION:Dan Falk\, award-winning author of The Science of Shakespeare: A New Look at the Playwright’s Universe\, joins Dr. Eric Dorfman\, President of the Linda Hall Library\, for a lively conversation on the connections between the famous playwright and the beginnings of the Scientific Revolution—and how\, together\, they changed the world forever. \n\n\n\nWilliam Shakespeare lived at a remarkable time―a period we now recognize as the first phase of the Scientific Revolution. New ideas were transforming Western thought\, the medieval was giving way to the modern\, and the work of a few key figures hinted at the brave new world to come: the methodical and rational Galileo\, the skeptical Montaigne\, and―as Falk convincingly argues―Shakespeare\, who observed human nature just as intently as the astronomers who studied the night sky. \n\n\n\nESU members and Friends of ESU are invited to attend this fascinating free lecture at Linda Hall Library either in-person or virtually. Note: in-person registration begins February 12 at 9:00 am. \n\n\n\nWhen: Thursday\, March 26\, 2026\, at 7:00 PM CT \n\n\n\nWhere: Linda Hall Library\, 5109 Cherry St.\, Kansas City\, MO \n\n\n\nTickets: Free lecture but registration required. Registration opens on February 12\, 2026 at 9:00 AM CT. Click this link on February 12 to register for the in-person lecture. In-person registrations cannot be made before February 12. \n\n\n\nVirtual Lecture: If you prefer to watch this program virtually via Zoom\, you may register now. Please click here to register for the virtual program. \n\n\n\nParking: Free parking at the library \n\n\n\nAbout Dan Falk \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nDan Falk is a journalist and author with a particular interest in science\, especially physics and astronomy. His freelance writing credits include Smithsonian\, New Scientist\, Scientific American\, Astronomy\, and many other publications. The Science of Shakespeare is his third book; his two previous books are In Search of Time and Universe on a T-Shirt. \n\n\n\nThe Toronto native is a regular contributor to Canadian public radio\, and he has won several international awards for his radio documentaries. He also hosts a podcast called BookLab\, which reviews popular science books. Falk was a 2011-12 Knight Science Journalism Fellow at MIT. \n\n\n\nAbout Eric Dorfman\, PhD \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nDr. Dorfman is the President of Linda Hall Library. He is the author of several popular books on New Zealand natural history and climate change\, as well as scholarly papers on museum education\, public programming\, Egyptology\, and the ecology of wetland birds. His most recent book\, The Future of Natural History Museums\, is currently being translated into Chinese and Japanese. He earned a doctorate at the University of Sydney on scale-dependent habitat use of waterbirds in eastern and central Australia. Prior to his current position\, Dr. Dorfman was CEO of the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences and a Research Professor at North Carolina State University

SUMMARY:Happy Hour: Kansas City: Home of Disney’s Original Animation Studio
DESCRIPTION:Walter Elias Disney (1901-1966) was born in Chicago\, IL. The Disney family moved to Kansas City in 1911 where nine-year old Walt delivered newspapers with his brother\, Roy. Six years later\, Walt attended classes at the Kansas City Art Institute. Founded in 1885\, the Kansas City Art Institute is one of the oldest and most respected art and design colleges in the U.S. In 1918\, during World War I\, Walt served in France with the Red Cross. \n\n\n\nIn May\, 1922\, Disney founded his first professional film studio in Kansas City\, Missouri. He named it Laugh-O-gram Films. He rented an office suite on the second floor of the then-new building on 1127 E. 31st Street in Kansas City\, a building designed by noted Kansas City architect Nelle Peters. Walt and his young crew made inventive cartoons\, including several loosely based on classic fairy tales such as Cinderella and his first Alice comedy\, Alice’s Wonderland. \n\n\n\nDespite the short life of Laugh-O-gram Films\, it was the foundation of Walt Disney’s remarkable career and of The Walt Disney Company of today. Laugh-O-Gram was “the cradle of Hollywood animation.” Although animation has been produced for nearly 20 years on the east coast\, Walt Disney and the Kansas City animators who followed him to Hollywood were the first to produce animation there. \n\n\n\nThe Laugh-O-gram Films office is where Disney first met and befriended a real-life mouse scampering on the office floor. Before Walt moved to Los Angeles\, he made a point of taking his mouse companion into the countryside so he would not fall victim to the cats which lived in the restaurant on the first floor of the Laugh-O-gram building. It is said by some that this provided Disney with the inspiration for his most well-known creation: Mickey Mouse. \n\n\n\nDecades have passed since Disney moved to Los Angeles in 1923. The old building on 31st Street in Kansas City fell into decay. Then\, when the building was facing demolition\, local real estate developer\, Butch Rigby\, joined with Columbia\, Missouri\, attorney Dan Viets and others to form a non-profit corporation\, Thank You Walt Disney\, Inc. Through years of perseverance and fundraising efforts\, the old “Laugh-O-gram” building on 31st Street is now undergoing a massive\, multi-million-dollar renovation dedicated to the legacy of Walt Disney. \n\n\n\nOur guest speaker for this ESU Happy Hour is Dan Viets\, President of Thank You Walt Disney\, Inc. With photos and other images\, Dan will share his vast knowledge of Walt Disney\, the history of the Laugh-O-gram building and describe the services and activities planned for the building. The ESU Kansas City Branch sponsors this ESU Happy Hour. ESU Happy Hour programs are online\, free\, and open to all members and the public. Registration is required. \n\n\n\nAbout Dan Viets \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nDan Viets is President of Thank You Walt Disney\, Inc. He joined Thank You Walt Disney shortly after it was formed in the mid-1990s. He has served on the TYWD Board for more than 25 years.Dan is co-author of the book\, Walt Disney’s Missouri: The Roots of a Creative Genius\, published by The Kansas City Star. He has also authored articles about Walt Disney’s Missouri history published by the University of Missouri School of Journalism\, Truman State University\, the Missouri Historical Society\, the Jackson County Historical Society\, and others. \n\n\n\nDan has lectured for many years about Walt Disney’s Missouri history on behalf of the Missouri Humanities Council/State Historical Society of Missouri. He has made presentations at the Walt Disney Boyhood Hometown Museum in Marceline\, Missouri\, the Walt Disney Family Museum in San Francisco\, as well as to Disney employees at Disneyland in California\, Walt Disney World in Florida\, Walt Disney/Pixar Animators\, and at the national convention of Disneyana Fan Club in Anaheim\, California. Dan has a degree in Philosophy and Psychology and a Juris Doctorate in Law from the University of Missouri at Columbia. \n\n\n\nCocktail:Scotch Mist was Walt’s favorite drink for a reason. It’s complex yet refreshing\, the perfect cocktail to sip slowly on the patio at the end of a warm day.2 ounces of Scotch whiskey1 ounce of freshly squeezed lemon juice1/2 ounce of simple syrup (equal parts sugar and water\, dissolved)Soda waterCrushed iceLemon twist

ESU’s Ben Martin will conduct the interview. Mitchell will talk about the remarkable stories of several European emigrant families who make their way to America and endure harsh realities of a country they never knew. \n\n\n\nWhen: Saturday\, January 11\, 2025 at 2:00 pm CST \n\n\n\nWhere: KD’s Books\, 241 SE Main St.\, Lee’s Summit\, MO \n\n\n\nAdmission: Free but registration required. All have distinct reasons for leaving\, some far more sinister than others\, but their collective goal remains the same: the hope of a better life. Although strangers to begin with\, their lives are set to collide and become entwined with love and sorrow as their paths cross and recross. \n\n\n\nFrom the hustle and bustle of New York City to the vast flatlands and rolling plains of Kansas\, into the battlefields and hospital wards of the Civil War\, Hartley\, Caitlin\, Owain\, and the Kleist family must each find their way\, knowing that their lives will never be the same again. The Golden Door is intertwined with the real events and people of the time. It is a tale of new beginnings and harsh realities: of kindness\, hope and fear\, bravery and sacrifice\, of freedom\, love\, and loss. \n\n\n\nThe publisher\, Arcanum Press\, has been kind enough to donate a portion of the proceeds from The Golden Door to the Daughters of the British Empire in Kansas and The English-Speaking Union Kansas City Branch as well as other selected historical societies and organizations linked to the American Civil War. The English-Speaking Union\, Kansas City Branch in partnership with the Kansas Chapter of the Daughters of The British Empire provided advice\, engagement\, and support in publishing this remarkable story. \n\n\n\nAbout the Author Alice Mitchell \n\n\n\nAlison Harrop (alias Alice Mitchell) won a prestigious Betty Trask Book Award in 1985 for her first Novel ‘Instead of Eden’ which is about the lives of a grandmother\, mother and daughter during the ’60s and ’70s in the North of England. More than thirty years later\, after a rewarding career as a medical doctor\, she released her second work ‘The Mortimer Affair – Joan de Joinville’s Story’ set in the turbulent reign of Edward II.  After many years living in Merseyside\, Chester and North Wales\, Alison is now retired and  has  returned  to Yorkshire. Her work of Historical Fiction ‘The Golden Door’ is a tale of 19th Century Immigrants to America. While initially struggling to make their way  in New York\, they are embroiled in the lead up to the Civil War along the western frontiers of Kansas and the Civil War battles themselves

SUMMARY:The Questionable Identity of Shakespeare
DESCRIPTION:Monday\, October 30\, 2023\, 10:00-11:15 am CT \nThe question may be met with chagrin by traditionalists\, but to some\, the identity of William Shakespeare is not positively decided. Dr. Felicia Hardison Londré\, Ph.D\, presents a thought-provoking analysis on the Shakespeare authorship question. This free lecture program is at 10:00 am on Monday\, October 30\, 2023 at Grant Hall Auditorium\, 5228 Charlotte St.\, Kansas City\, MO.\, University of Missouri at Kansas City Campus. Metered parking is immediately south of Grant Hall. \nWas it William Shaksper of Stratford-upon-Avon or Edward De Vere\, 17th Earl of Oxford or some other playwright of the time? Dr. Londré delves into the sensitive question of authorship in an illustrated presentation.  \nDr. Londré\, Curators’ Professor of Theatre at UMKC\, is the honorary co-founder of the Heart of America Shakespeare Festival and was the founding secretary of the Shakespeare Theatre Association of America. In 1999\, she was inducted into the College of Fellows of the American Theatre at the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C. Dr. Londré has held visiting professorships at Hosei University in Tokyo and at Marquette University in Milwaukee. She has lectured internationally in cities including Beijing\, Nanjing\, Tokyo\, Osaka\, Venice\, Rouen\, Caen\, Paris (Sorbonne)\, Brussels\, Moscow\, and a lecture tour of Hungary. She began presenting lectures on the Shakespeare authorship question in 1991 and has since presented this lecture to open-minded intellectuals (and others) to audiences in Hungary\, Japan\, China\, and many American cities. \nWhile the English-Speaking Union does not endorse any particular position on this controversy and remains neutral on the Shakespeare authorship question\, it does welcome and encourage debate on this centuries-old topic. Debate promotes critical-thinking skills so educators\, students\, scholars\, and the general public can begin to develop their own opinions on the controversy. \n“It’s the mark of an educated mind to be able to entertain a thought without accepting it.”—Aristotle (384 BC – 322 BC)

SUMMARY:A Candle Against the Dark
DESCRIPTION:Ben Martin\, President of the English-Speaking Union Kansas City Branch\, has written a stage play titled\, A Candle Against the Dark premiering at the Englewood Arts Center in Independence\, Missouri in October. \nA Candle Against the Dark tells the true story of one Kansas City family’s experience with polio. In addition\, it tells the stories of others who have been affected by the disease. The story follows victims and doctors\, parents and nurses. It recalls a time in our history when we were helpless against a seemingly invincible foe and reminds us of all those who worked so hard to achieve near-total elimination of polio from the world. \nCarl Chinnery describes his family’s battle against polio. The year was 1942 and Carl was the youngest of five brothers who had all been struck with the disease. Carl reads a letter penned by his mother\, describing the family’s experience. That letter was the beginning of a story that Ben Martin turned into this moving and heartfelt stage play. \nAll ESU members\, Friends of ESU\, and guests are invited to be part of this special ESU Kansas City Group Event. \nWhen: Sunday\, October 15\, 2023\, 2:30 PM \nWhere: Englewood Arts Center\, 10901 E Winner Rd\, Independence\, MO. \nTickets: $40 per person. Seats non-reserved. Click below\, select October 15 and number of tickets needed. \nAll proceeds go to fundraising for PolioPlus—A program of Rotary International which established the world’s largest public health initiative: the global eradication of  polio.
