We appreciated the support\, enthusiasm and generosity you brought to the evening. Your presence made the event truly memorable\, and we are deeply grateful for your continued commitment to the ESU. \n\n\n\nI am delighted to reiterate the wonderful news I announced that evening: in just one year\, the ESU Capacity Building Campaign has raised over $900\,000\, more than 90% of our $1 million goal\, thanks to you\, our most generous leadership donors. SUMMARY:IRC Summer of Global Goals
DESCRIPTION:Every four years\, the World Cup brings together fans from around the globe to celebrate the most widely popular sport in the world: football (or soccer\, if you’re American). This year’s tournament broke a number of records\, including the most teams ever competing (48) and the first time three countries have co-hosted the event (Mexico\, Canada\, and the United States). Not only does the major sporting event have a rich and complicated history\, but this year’s historic nature introduces brand new impacts for Kansas City as a first-time host city. After six games\, guests in the hundreds of thousands\, and complicated shifts in politics and infrastructure\, Kansas City will end the summer much differently than it was at the start. \n\n\n\nThis program showcases four UMKC professors of various disciplines to discuss the history\, cultural shifts\, and environmental impacts of the World Cup on Kansas City. DESCRIPTION:During the 250th Anniversary of the birth of our nation\, many focus on the colonial activities centering around New England. A little-known event occurred in North Carolina in the little village of Halifax that helped turn the tide and create our nation. The Halifax Resolves and the three North Carolina Delegates that attended the Second Congressional Congress were the catalysts that brought us to the founding of the United States of America. \n\n\n\nWe invite all ESU members and guests to be part of ESU’s continuing celebration of America’s 250th Anniversary with this Happy Hour. Brian Burns will describe a historic event that was the first official action for independence from any of the thirteen British colonies in continental North America. \n\n\n\nThis ESU Happy Hour is sponsored by the ESU Sandhills Pinehurst\, N.C. An avid military historian\, Brian earned his degrees in US Military History from Purdue University and the University of Arkansas. With many of the battlefields of the American Revolution and the Civil War within driving distance\, Brian has traveled and visited most up and down the Eastern Seaboard. Although not known for the most famous actions in the American Revolution\, as we celebrate the 250th Anniversary of the United States\, he will show how North Carolina played a significant role in the formation of our nation. \n\n\n\nCocktail: \n\n\n\nColonial Rum Punch \n\n\n\nMake ahead: Oleo Saccharum (the colonial secret weapon) Peel strips of lemon zest and toss with ½ cup of sugar and let rest for 30 minutes. The oils from the peel dissolve into the sugar\, creating a fragrant\, silky syrup. \n\n\n\nPrepare: Combine one shot of rum\, ½ cup of citrus juice and one tablespoon of oleo saccharum. Add cold water (or cooled black tea for extra depth – a popular colonial trick). Add a large ice cube and enjoy.

SUMMARY:Happy Hour: Connecticut: “The Provisions State”
DESCRIPTION:As ESU Happy Hours continue to salute America’s 250th birthday\, we turn to the great state of Connecticut. By the mid-to-late 1700’s\, western Connecticut had developed as a quiet\, agricultural “backwater\,” landlocked and insulated from the politics and secessionist turmoil of the big colonial cities. Nevertheless\, during the Revolutionary War\, Connecticut earned the nickname “The Provisions State\,” by supplying vast amounts of meat\, grain\, clothing\, and weaponry to General George Washington’s Continental Army\, and was second only to Massachusetts in the number of men serving in the war. \n\n\n\nGovernor Jonathan Trumbull was the only colonial governor to openly and actively support the rebellion from the beginning. George Washington heavily relied on Trumbull’s logistical support\, famously referring to him as “Brother Jonathan.”  Many other soldiers\, spies and resistance activities came out of “the Nutmeg State.” Join us as our guest speaker\, Judge Edward Krumeich\, relates the many lesser-known military men\, skirmishes\, and resistance activities that came out of Connecticut. \n\n\n\nThis Happy Hour is sponsored by the ESU Greenwich\, CT Branch. A lifelong Greenwich resident\, he developed an early appreciation for the town’s rich history and traditions through his mother\, Marie C. Krumeich\, a public-school teacher and respected historian who authored A Child’s History of Greenwich. Inspired by her passion for local history\, Judge Krumeich has written extensively about Greenwich’s past in a variety of publications. \n\n\n\nBefore taking the bench\, Ed built an impressive record of public service. A graduate of Hamilton College and the Case Western Reserve University School of Law\, he served for many years in a variety of leadership roles in local government. His service included serving as Chairman of the Greenwich Board of Social Services\, as a member of the Representative Town Meeting\, and on the Budget Committee of the Board of Estimate and Taxation\, the town’s finance board. \n\n\n\nEd is also an experienced performer\, with featured roles in community theater and performances with “The Off Sounders\,” a local men’s a cappella group. His wife\, Elizabeth\, is also a lawyer and active community member. As a student\, Beth received the ESU Isabel Carden Griffin Memorial Scholarship to study in England during her gap year between high school and college.

DESCRIPTION:Despite there being no logical reason to say the opposite of what you mean\, and many people dismissing sarcasm as maladaptive\, full of contempt\, and “bad for you”\, its use is ubiquitous. So\, why would anybody use verbal irony and sarcasm\, if we risk not only being misunderstood\, but possibly worse? Newer science says that irony is actually good for you! It can help regulate emotions\, foster creativity\, and manage social relationships. This lecture will discuss science related to sarcasm\, from examples and prevalence of sarcasm in the world around us\, what happens in your brain when you encounter it\, and how we can use this communicative superpower to our advantage. \n\n\n\nThis free Think & Drink lecture is open to all ESU members and the public\, but RSVP is required. This one-hour lecture program was launched in July of 2025 by Casual Animal Brewing Company\, a microbrewery in the East Crossroads area\, south of downtown Kansas City. The lectures are held on the first and third Thursday of every month and bring together experts\, academics\, and curious minds for evening talks on topics that generate fresh perspectives\, ideas\, and discussion. No topic is off the table.  \n\n\n\nGuest Speaker: Dr. Valeria Pfeifer \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDr.  Pfeifer is the Assistant Professor of Psychology and Counseling\, University of Missouri-Kansas City. She broadly studies the Psychology of Language\, specifically asking questions about how language relates to cognition\, emotions\, and aging. For example\, Dr. Pfeifer is interested in how language and social interactions relate to wellbeing\, especially in older adults. She also researches how figurative language (such as metaphor or irony) can help express and regulate emotions.

SUMMARY:The Questionable Identity of William Shakespeare
DESCRIPTION:The question may be met with chagrin by traditionalists\, but to some\, the identity of William Shakespeare is not positively decided. Dr. Felicia Londré\, Ph.D\, presents a thought-provoking analysis on the Shakespeare authorship question. This free lecture program is at 10:00 am on Thursday\, October 29\, 2026\, on the campus of the University of Missouri at Kansas City. Location on campus to be announced on our website in August. In the meantime\, please save the date. \n\n\n\nWas it William Shaksper of Stratford-upon-Avon or Edward De Vere\, 17th Earl of Oxford or some other playwright of the time? Dr. Londré delves into the sensitive question of authorship in an illustrated presentation. \n\n\n\nDr. Londré\, Curators’ Distinguished Professor Emerita of Theatre at UMKC\, is the honorary co-founder of the Heart of America Shakespeare Festival and was the founding secretary of the Shakespeare Theatre Association of America. In 1999\, she was inducted into the College of Fellows of the American Theatre at the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C. Dr. Londré has held visiting professorships at Hosei University in Tokyo and at Marquette University in Milwaukee. She has lectured internationally in cities including Beijing\, Nanjing\, Tokyo\, Osaka\, Venice\, Rouen\, Caen\, Paris (Sorbonne)\, Brussels\, Moscow\, and a lecture tour of Hungary. She began presenting lectures on the Shakespeare authorship question in 1991 and has since presented this lecture to open-minded intellectuals (and others) to audiences in Hungary\, Japan\, China\, and many American cities. \n\n\n\nWhile the English-Speaking Union does not endorse any particular position on this controversy and remains neutral on the Shakespeare authorship question\, it does welcome and encourage debate on this centuries-old topic.
