SUMMARY:Think and Drink: Science of Sarcasm
DESCRIPTION:Despite there being no logical reason to say the opposite of what you mean\, and many people dismissing sarcasm as maladaptive\, full of contempt\, and “bad for you”\, its use is ubiquitous. So\, why would anybody use verbal irony and sarcasm\, if we risk not only being misunderstood\, but possibly worse? Newer science says that irony is actually good for you! It can help regulate emotions\, foster creativity\, and manage social relationships. This lecture will discuss science related to sarcasm\, from examples and prevalence of sarcasm in the world around us\, what happens in your brain when you encounter it\, and how we can use this communicative superpower to our advantage. \n\n\n\nThis free Think & Drink lecture is open to all ESU members and the public\, but RSVP is required. You will also receive at least one reminder email about the event when you RSVP. \n\n\n\nWhen: Thursday\, September 3\, 2026\, 6:00 pm \n\n\n\nLocation: Casual Animal Brewing\, 1725 McGee Street Kansas City\, MO \n\n\n\nTickets: Free admission but RSVP is required. This one-hour lecture program was launched in July of 2025 by Casual Animal Brewing Company\, a microbrewery in the East Crossroads area\, south of downtown Kansas City. The lectures are held on the first and third Thursday of every month and bring together experts\, academics\, and curious minds for evening talks on topics that generate fresh perspectives\, ideas\, and discussion. No topic is off the table.  \n\n\n\nGuest Speaker: Dr. Valeria Pfeifer \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDr.  Pfeifer is the Assistant Professor of Psychology and Counseling\, University of Missouri-Kansas City. She broadly studies the Psychology of Language\, specifically asking questions about how language relates to cognition\, emotions\, and aging. For example\, Dr. Pfeifer is interested in how language and social interactions relate to wellbeing\, especially in older adults. She also researches how figurative language (such as metaphor or irony) can help express and regulate emotions.

SUMMARY:Happy Hour: Becoming American: Philadelphia’s Story
DESCRIPTION:Philadelphia\, PA.\, America’s first capital\, held a pivotal role as the cradle of American democracy. When George Washington took the oath of office in 1789\, Philadelphia had the largest free and literate community of Africans in the entire British Atlantic. This community raised families\, built institutions\, created opportunities for self-emancipated Africans to continue north\, fought for equal rights\, and they participated in public life. They exemplified the ideals of the new republic. Oliver St. Clair Franklin is the creator and co-executive producer of a feature length documentary of our Founding Era through the lens of the Black Philadelphia community of that time. Franklin’s documentary\, Becoming American: Philadelphia’s Story\, explores how diverse groups that included European colonists\, Native Americans\, free Black communities\, and enslaved Africans lived and worked side-by-side to shape the new United States. Join this ESU Happy Hour as Oliver Franklin describes his film as a shared national and international historical record that explains how America came to be\, how it expanded\, and how its founding ideals continue to resonate today. This Happy Hour is sponsored by the ESU Philadelphia Branch. ESU Happy Hour programs are online\, free\, and open to all members and the public. Registration is required to receive the webinar link. \n\n\n\nREGISTER HERE About Oliver St. Clair Franklin\, CBE \n\n\n\nOliver St. Clair Franklin curated one of the first Black Film Festivals in the US (1972-78) and then produced documentary films.
