ESU New Orleans Branch

Welcome to the New Orleans Branch of the ESU

We've had an event-filled and fun year!  This was the international celebration of Shakespeare's 400th memorial year, and several of The English Speaking Union of New Orleans' programs revolved around this anniversary.  In February, the Branch sponsored its annual, high school Shakespeare competition at Tulane and our regional winner went on to compete in New York in the Nationals.

The Branch hosted a program by Tulane University's English Department Head, Mike Kuczynski in May.  He spoke about successfully bringing a touring First Folio copy to Tulane.  In May, the Branch also hosted international author, Andrea Mays and she spoke about her current book, The Millionaire and the Bard.

New Orleans by the Numbers

Join us for fine fellowship, dining and a fascinating program by John Magill, retired senior curator / historian from The Historic New Orleans Collection. He is also the author and/or contributor to six books including New Orleans: The First 300 Years (Pelican 2017), as well as an ESU Board member:

"NEW ORLEANS BY THE NUMBERS – CRESCENT CITY POPULATIONS 1810-1920"

Magill's lecture will focus on the Crescent City's population growth from 1810-1920, primarily from large European immigrations, and compare that growth with other dynamic cities of the nation. Magill will also compare New Orleans along with other cities in the New World, and in keeping with the English Speaking Union compare it also with newly emerging cities of the British Empire.

Monday, May 7 at 6:30 p.m. at Ralph's On The Park !
Prices: $65 members, $70 non-members
