ESU New York City Branch

Message from the New York Branch

Dear Fellow New York Branch Members,

We begin a new year, having enjoyed a busy fall season that was topped off by a wild and wildly successful Yuletide Party, again co-sponsored by the British Schools and Universities Club. The event took place at the ESU on Thursday, December 7, 2017, attracting a diverse crowd who enjoyed an open bar, buffet meal, carolling, and a memorable performance of the panto Little Red Riding Hood.  With such success under our belt, we have booked next year's (already this year's) Yuletide Party for December 6, 2018...so mark your calendar.

Now, like all New Yorkers, we are emerging from a deep freeze that took all of us by surprise.  Along with the cold, many of us have been suffering from a cold or the flu.  But, to brighten things up, the Branch is working on scheduling a number of lectures, theater evenings, staged readings, a poetry evening, book discussions, a Beatles night, and possibly a tea in addition to sponsoring the New York semi finals and finals for the English-Speaking Union National Shakespeare Competition as well as seeking out appropriate candidates--high school teachers--for scholarship awards that cover costs of summer study in the United Kingdom.  In the meantime, the English-Speaking Union of the Commonwealth (Dartmouth House) is preparing its centenary celebration with a week of activities in London during May, the week prior to the next royal wedding.  And we, the ESU, with an eye toward our anniversary, are beginning to make plans for our centennial in 2020.  This year's annual general meeting, scheduled for New Orleans in late November, may very well be the kick off for those celebrations.
