We Fainted Alternately on the Sofa:
Jane Austen in the Making

Marking the 200th anniversary of Jane Austen's death, the ESU New York presents an engaging and fun one-woman performance by Karin Fernald that captures the humor of the teenaged Jane.  Karin plays an older Jane looking back at her early years when, as a child and young woman, she was already honing her writing skills. Jane also wrote short novels and plays, none of which were ever meant for publication but to entertain family and friends. Karin reads from these farcical and anarchic stories, short novels, and plays offering comments from the older woman who recognizes her teenage writing faults but still has great enjoyment in her own budding skills. This solo show has been acclaimed as "the most enchanting and funniest evening I have had for years."

Karin Fernald is a British actor, writer, and speaker who researches and creates a vivid picture of a character and a historical period.  Karin has appeared at festivals in England and on tour in Australia, New Zealand, Germany, Japan, and South Africa.  She has travelled widely with her solo show on diarist Fanny Burney. In 2010, she published a children's book on Queen Victoria, The Dumpy Princes, which was shortlisted for a Young Quills literary award.  We Fainted Alternately on the Sofa was seen at this year's Rye Festival in September 2017 and is scheduled for next summer's annual conference of the Jane Austen Society of Australia.
