ESU President and Executive Director Alice Boyne welcomes the debaters

Celebrating the second year of the New York Debate League, sponsored by the ESU, two teams of middle school students debated the proposition: "We should welcome the end of the printed book" on June 15 at the Morgan Library & Museum.  The teams comprised three students from Hunter High College Community Schools in New York City and three students from the Hackley School in Tarrytown.

Xavier Pacheco from New York City wins the 30th annual ESU National Shakespeare Competition.

Xavier (a resident of Queens) is a student of Gabriel Silva at the Urban Assembly School for the Performing Arts (a pubic high school in the West Harlem 
neighborhood
 of Manhattan).

English in Action Celebrates World Book Night 2013

Students from France, Spain, Korea, Japan, Hong Kong, Russia and Brazil celebrated World Book Night in New York City during their Tuesday, April 23rd session of English in Action. Their conversation partners presented them with copies of The House on Mango Street, by Sandra Cisneros.
They were urged to read the books and then pass them along to someone else. The House on Mango Street was selected because of its focus on the immigrant experience in the US.

Teacher Profile: Marlene May

The Bronx is burning with a love of Shakespeare! Marlene May, who teaches Theater at Fordham High School for the Arts, attended the 2012 Shakespeare Set Free Institutes in NYC as a Karen Jeff Scholar. Enthused and energized by her experience, May partnered with Matt McGraw in the English Department at FHSA to organize their first annual Shakespeare Competition.

o welcome its members from a summer hiatus, the New York Branch held a Fall Reception on September 24 at the ESU house. We welcomed Chessy Whelan and Matthew Willmore, USA Team Debaters from the ESU of the Commonwealth (Dartmouth House), for a debate with local
teams from St. John's University and Adelphi University. In front of a packed house comprising ESU members, as well as middle school students and their parents, these eight
debaters faced off on a very current topic:
This House Believes the EU should impose a minimum quota of refugees to be accepted by member states.
