TLAB Debriefing – 21 March 2026

Jay Kauffman and Ned Fischer, the teachers the Charlottesville branch sent to the UK to study in the summer of 2025 as part of its philanthropy, met with members of the branch to provide a debriefing of their Teachers Learning Abroad (TLAB) experience and the value it has provided them upon their return to the classroom.

Several members of the branch as well as candidate teachers for our 2026 summer scholarships attended the debriefing which was held at Tandem Friends School in Charlottesville.  Special thanks to members Constance Paske and Debbie Pruett for organizing the event and leading the hospitality offering.  Thanks also to all of the members who also brought snacks.

Jay (from the Miller School) and Ned (from Tandem Friends School) both attended classes at Exeter College in Oxford.

Those able to attend were thrilled to hear both teachers describe their experiences, which included fun exploring, some visits by family, and details of each course and what it meant to them upon their return to the classroom.  Both candidates, it is safe to say, were in awe of some of the teaching they received and instructors they met.  The comradery of fellow attendees participating from other ESU locations was also memorable.

An interesting note from both of them was that returning to the life of “student” was a unique and enjoyable experience.  A key aspect of being a student was being only responsible for their school work, allowing them to revel in time spent thinking.  They especially enjoyed the libraries at Oxford for this contemplation time.

We encourage you to explore more details on each of their trips by clicking on the following links.
