Film buffs will be delighted as The Linda Hall Library presents this 1953 version of Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar. This free morning showing of Shakespeare’s classic has an all-star cast including Marlon Brando as Mark Antony, James Mason as Brutus, John Gielgud as Cassius, Louis Calhern as Julius Caesar, Greer Garson as Calpurnia, and Deborah Kerr as Portia. Directed by the legendary Joseph L. Mankiewicz.
Billed as the greatest drama of all time, this 1953 version was shot in striking black-and-white and is considered the best and most acclaimed movie version of Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar. It was nominated for five Academy Awards including Best Picture and Best Actor and remains renowned for its faithful script, powerful oratorical scenes, and grand scale.
About the Film:
The growing ambition of Julius Caesar is a source of major concern to his close friend Brutus. Cassius persuades him to participate in his plot to assassinate Caesar, but they both sorely underestimated Mark Antony.
