About the film:

Set against the backdrop of World War I, A Very Long Engagement is a sweeping, visually stunning romantic drama starring Audrey Tautou and Gaspard Ulliel.

The film follows a young woman’s unwavering quest to uncover the truth about her fiancé, who has gone missing at the front – blending love, mystery, and the harsh realities of war into a deeply moving story.

The Kansas City Branch of the English-Speaking Union has a special connection to World War I. In fact, our very first branch president, Lt. Colonel Marvin H. Gates, served as a commanding officer in France during the Great War. That shared history makes A Very Long Engagement an especially meaningful film for ESU, as it reflects on the personal stories and shared experiences and creates a natural link that brings people together across time and borders even in the hardest times. We hope you can join us on May 9.
