Evelyn Wrench Speaker Program Lecture: George VI and Elizabeth: The Marriage That Saved the Monarchy

The English-Speaking Union – Kansas City Branch and the International Relations Council will be presenting the Evelyn Wrench Lecture on Monday, September 30 at Polsinelli on the Plaza. 

About the Speaker

Sally Bedell Smith is the author of bestselling biographies of Queen Elizabeth II; William S. Paley; Pamela Harriman; Diana, Princess of Wales; John and Jacqueline Kennedy; and Bill and Hillary Clinton. A contributing editor at Vanity Fair since 1996, she previously worked at Time and The New York Times, where she was a cultural news reporter. In 2012, Smith was the recipient of the Washington Irving Medal for Literary Excellence. She is the mother of three children and lives in Washington, D.C., with her husband, Stephen G. Smith.

George VI and Elizabeth: The Marriage That Saved the Monarchy

Bestselling writer about the Royal Family Sally Bedell Smith gives an illustrated talk about her account of the marriage between George VI and Elizabeth and the raising of their daughter Elizabeth II that she says saved the monarchy.
Bedell Smith was granted access to her parents’ letters and diaries by Queen Elizabeth II. She explains how a loving and devoted marriage helped the king and queen to meet the challenges of World War II, confirm the public’s faith in the monarchy and raise their daughters Elizabeth and Margaret. Bedell Smith explains how they formed relationships with Churchill and Roosevelt and inspired Britain with their courage and compassion.

About the Evelyn Wrench Speaker Series

A collaboration between ESU National and ESU Branches across the United States, the program presents a great opportunity for Branches to connect with their Members and others in their community. Named for ESU founder Evelyn Wrench, the program provides speakers to ESU Branches throughout the United States over the course of one to two weeks. Wrench Speakers have been renowned historians, politicians, and authors, presenting their work for ESU members and the general public. Lectures cover a wide range of topics, including but not limited to: current events; history; language and literature; art and architecture; and travel.
