Evelyn Wrench Lecture Series

The ESU Shreveport Branch hosts many prominent authors and scholars including ESU’s own Evelyn Wrench Lecture Series named after our founder. These renowned British and American speakers present programs on a wide range of  topics, including but not limited to, current events, history, language, literature, art, architecture, and travel.

In September, 2024, the Shreveport Branch was privileged to welcome Baroness Catherine Meyer direct from London who presented an intriguing program on her book, “Survivor.” Catherine Irene Jacqueline Meyer, Baroness Meyer,[1] CBE (née Laylle; born 26 January 1953), is a British politician, businesswoman and Conservative life peer. She is the widow of Sir Christopher Meyer, the former British Ambassador to the United States. In 1999, she founded the charity PACT, now Action Against Abduction

In March 2023, the Shreveport Branch hosted Dr. James Raven.  James Russell Raven LittD FBA FSA (born 13 April 1959) is a British scholar specializing in the history of the book. His published works include The English Novel 1770–1829 (2000), What is the History of the Book? (2018)[1] and The Oxford Illustrated History of the Book (2020).[2] As of 2024, he was professor emeritus of history at the University of Essex, a life fellow of Magdalene College, Cambridge, and a professor in the humanities at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU).  He spoke about “What is the History of the Book? “.
