Teachers Learning Abroad (TLab)

The Syracuse Branch of the English-Speaking Union of the United States is offering a $4000 Travel & Learn (TLab) Scholarship for a local high school teacher or life-long learner to study in the UK Summer 2027!

Start planning now to cross the pond next summer for an unforgettable immersive experience! Discover Shakespeare in the context that brought his works to life — exploring his hometown in Stratford-upon-Avon on the 1-week Page to Stage Program or performing on the stage of the Globe Theatre on the 2-week Teaching Shakespeare Through Performance in London. Live & learn at the University of Edinburgh studying writing, literature or theatre on 2 week courses when the town comes alive during the International Fringe Festival!

The ESU’s partnerships give you access to renowned scholars and behind-the-scenes experiences designed for classroom teachers and lifelong learners. ESU TLab programs provide the opportunity to study with top scholars, professors, actors and see world class productions at the Royal Shakespeare Company and Globe Theatre.  ESU Branch scholarships are for current classroom teachers attending our courses each July for the ultimate professional and personal development. Return to the US refreshed and reinvigorated with new insights to share with your students & colleagues, family and friends.

ESU TLab Programs are offered every July and August. 2027 dates and details are posted on the ESU website as they become available in the UK. Until then, 2026 details are kept on the website for reference.  Please note, we estimate the costs of the 2027 UK summer study programs will range from $3000 to $4000 depending on the length of the program (1-week or 2-week).

Since 1957, the ESU has provided summer study abroad scholarships to middle and high school teachers at Oxford, Edinburgh and Shakespeare’s Globe in London.

Over 2,000 teachers have returned revitalized and inspired to share their new teaching strategies, knowledge and international perspective with over 200,000 students nationwide. The ESU and its Branches offer full and partial Teachers Learning Abroad (TLab) Scholarships to pay for the cost of study in the UK. The courses offered are for 2-3 weeks and cost $5,000-$6,000 which includes tuition, private room and some meals. ESU TLab Programs are offered at Oxford, Edinburgh and Shakespeare’s Globe in London each summer in July  and early August.
