Greetings! Thank you for your interest in English Speaking Union. My name is Cindy Poinsett, and I am the Denver Branch President. I am a high school English and Theatre teacher. I first became aware of the ESU in 2004 and been involved ever since. I am also currently the Shakespeare Competition Coordinator for the Denver Branch.
We pride ourselves in making our educational programs the focus of our organization, striving to provide quality programming for high school students and teachers. We offer scholarships to high school teachers for summer study in the UK at Shakespeare’s Globe in London, Oxford University, and The University of Edinburgh. We host a Shakespeare Competition, usually in February, and the winner is awarded an all-expense-paid trip to New York City to compete with other ESU Branch winners. And we hold the Dr. Howard F. Beckley Writing Competition for high school students giving cash prizes to winners!
Another opportunity to be involved is the English in Action program. This program is an avenue for immigrants to have conversations with ESU members, so they improve their English and feel more acclimated into our culture.
Aside from our educational programs, we offer many social and cultural events such as trips to the Denver Art Museum, Colorado Shakespeare Festival, and the Wrench Speaker Program. If you want to learn more about us or any of our programs, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us at denver@esuus.org.
