Colonial NC Branch ESU Scholarships
As an advocate for local literacy programs, the Colonial NC Branch invites teachers in working in English Second Language (ESL) programs in eastern NC, to select an outstanding student based on their determination and growth in becoming proficient in the English language, excelling in their studies and embracing the American culture. Our Branch offers student scholarships to ESL learners in our region. This year we offer one $100 scholarship in the fall and another in the spring semester. Colonial NC Branch ESU ESL Grant
Each year, the Colonial NC Branch awards a $1,000 English as a Second Language Grant to support local programs that serve K–12 students. The grant may be used to launch a new literacy initiative, sustain an existing program, or expand a successful effort that promote ESL. One grant is awarded annually in November. National ESU Scholarship Opportunities
Luard Morse Scholarship
The ESU Luard Morse Scholarship is a merit-based grant that provides up to $25,000 towards a semester of study at any university in the United Kingdom and is open to sophomores pursuing a four-year degree. The scholarship is available to American students attending Historically Black Colleges and Universities in the United States pursuing any discipline and has been awarded to students majoring in economics, philosophy, finance, mathematics, liberal arts and the sciences. Students in all disciplines are eligible.
Since the inaugural 1969-1970 academic year, 87 exceptional students have been awarded scholarships to study at 18 universities including Oxford, Cambridge and the London School of Economics.
Secondary School Exchange Scholarship
The ESU Secondary School Exchange Scholarship is a merit-based scholarship that provides tuition, room and board for US and UK students to spend a semester or year (gap year) abroad between high school and college. Since its inception in 1928, the ESU of the United States and ESU of the Commonwealth have worked closely together to provide the scholarship opportunity for thousands of students to expand their horizons academically and culturally by studying at secondary schools in the US and UK. The second-oldest of our educational programs after
the Evelyn Wrench Speaker Series, the SSE is at the heart of the ESU mission to use the English language to foster global understanding and goodwill through cultural and educational exchanges. Through this experience, students gain maturity, independence and global perspectives that benefit them in college and in their future careers.
ESU SSE Scholars describe their experience abroad as a most formative time in their lives, and many go on to become active alumni of their host schools and members of the English-Speaking Union.
The ESU SSE Scholarship is open to high school seniors for the year immediately following graduation. SSE candidates must be U.S. Citizens and demonstrate strong scholastic achievement, extra-curricular participation, leadership, and personal character.
Teachers Learning Abroad (TLab)
Since 1957, the ESU has provided summer study abroad scholarships to middle and high school teachers at Oxford, Edinburgh and Shakespeare’s Globe in London. Over 2,000 teachers have returned revitalized and inspired to share their new teaching strategies, knowledge and international perspective with over 200,000 students nationwide. The ESU and its Branches offer full and partial Teachers Learning Abroad (TLab) Scholarships to pay for the cost of study in the UK. The courses offered are for 2-3 weeks and cost $5,000-$6,000 which
includes tuition, private room and some meals. ESU TLab Programs are offered at Oxford, Edinburgh and Shakespeare’s Globe in London each summer in July and early August. Learn more.
