COLONIAL NC TEEN COMPETES IN 34th ANNUAL ENGLISH-SPEAKING UNION NATIONAL SHAKESPEARE COMPETITON IN NEW YORK CITY

With a performance of a sonnet and monologue from Shakespeare, Felicia Grimes  from Kinston, NC, a student of Matthew Raines at Kinston High School in Kinston, placed as a semi-finalist in the 34th  annual English-Speaking Union National Shakespeare Competition in New York City. The Competition took place on May 1, 2017 on the stage of the Mitzi Newhouse Theater at Lincoln Center with 54 semi-finalists from as many ESU Branch competitions nationwide. Felicia previously won the ESU Colonial NC Branch competition.

The winner of the 34th English-Speaking Union National Shakespeare Competition, Ogechi Egonu, representing the San Francisco Branch, received a full scholarship to attend the American Shakespeare Center Theatre Camp in Staunton, VA, this summer.  Second place winner, Brandon Burk, from the Kentucky Branch, won a cash prize of $1,000 from The English-Speaking Union, while the third place winner, Trevon Wainwright, representing the Kansas City Branch of the ESU, received an award of $500 provided by The Shakespeare Society.

Welcome to the 2016-17 year of the Colonial NC Branch! We have a varied program for the year and we hope you will be able to join us. Put a copy of the program on your refrigerator or into your mobile calendar. And be sure to return to this space often for updates, details, and directions for all the programs. The year's slate of officers and board members were sworn in by past president John Leys at the Queen's Birthday Luncheon in June. They are (from left to right):

2017 National Shakespeare Competition

We invite schools serving Grades 9-12 in our area to participate in the 2017 ESU National Shakespeare Competition. The Competition provides teachers with a free performance- based program for the study of English Language Arts and Shakespeare that meets state standards..
