REGISTER FOR BOTH DAYS FOR ONLY $125

Co-sponsored by The Morgan Library & Museum and the Folger Shakespeare Library

With the approach of the 400th commemoration of Shakespeare's death, it's time to look at something that teachers almost never have an opportunity to see—the earliest texts of his plays. Of course, none of Shakespeare's manuscripts exist, so the next best things are the earliest printed editions—the quartos and folios. During the course of this day, we will take a deep look at the process and the history of printing and editing of Shakespeare's plays. The workshop will include viewing some of the rare treasures of the Morgan Library and Museum, including their copy of Shakespeare's First Folio (1623) and the first Quarto edition of Othello (1622). Using examples of differences between the Quarto and Folio texts of Romeo and Juliet (1597 and 1599), Richard III (1597), Hamlet (1603 and 1604), King Lear (1608 and 1619) Titus Andronicus (1594), and Othello (1622), attendees will grapple with the issues of printing and editing texts as well as seeing how the differences among them ultimately affect on-stage performance.

Each teacher will get a handsome booklet containing facsimiles of both Quarto and Folio pages along with essays and strategies for teaching with these texts.
