New Orleans teen performs at the 35th Annual National Shakespeare Competition

April 23 may have been a normal Monday for most high school students, but for Rohan Padmakumar from Lusher Charter School it will be a day to remember forever. Rohan, child of Ambika Prasad and student of Beau Bratcher, placed as a finalist at the 35th Annual National Shakespeare Competition on William Shakespeare's birthday while competing against 55 students from around the US on stage at the Mitzi Newhouse Theater in Lincoln Center as the culmination of a year-long competition hosted by the English-Speaking Union (ESU).

Prior to arriving in New York City for the competition, Rohan wrote

Shakespeare is, simply put, a genius. He is responsible for coining phrases that we use every day and writing works that made tremendous strides in the field of literature and the art form of theater. In NYC, I look forward to presenting his work to the best of my ability while at the same time interacting with like minded people my age.

To qualify for the National Shakespeare Competition finals, Rohan won the regional ESU New Orleans Branch Shakespeare Competition on March 4, 2018.

New Orleans by the Numbers

Join us for fine fellowship, dining and a fascinating program by John Magill, retired senior curator / historian from The Historic New Orleans Collection. He is also the author and/or contributor to six books including New Orleans: The First 300 Years (Pelican 2017), as well as an ESU Board member:

"NEW ORLEANS BY THE NUMBERS – CRESCENT CITY POPULATIONS 1810-1920"

Magill's lecture will focus on the Crescent City's population growth from 1810-1920, primarily from large European immigrations, and compare that growth with other dynamic cities of the nation. Magill will also compare New Orleans along with other cities in the New World, and in keeping with the English Speaking Union compare it also with newly emerging cities of the British Empire.

Monday, May 7 at 6:30 p.m. at Ralph's On The Park !
Prices: $65 members, $70 non-members
